The Exile Ekphrastic Challenges will cover many topics and concerns, and run throughout each year – each with a set deadline for submissions.
Each selected author will receive a $100 honorarium, plus a complimentary subscription to the magazine.
Ekphrastic refers to an author responding (usually poetry, but can be flash fiction, or nonfiction) to a work of art, conveying the deeper symbolism of the art form, often rhetorical in nature and of its greater meaning.
Length: please keep your “response” to a single page (easily fits on an 8.5 x 11)
To make a submission (using Submittable): Exile’s Ekphrastic Challenge
Challenge #1 Your literary response to artwork by Gabriela Campos – to be a total of five works. This is the first in a series of our challenges, with a deadline of June 27, 2021.
On five Sundays, beginning May 9, each post will provide one of five images curated to elicit a literary response. Exile’s editors will select the poem or short fiction that best responds to the artwork – the five winning literary works will be published alongside each of the five artworks in a forthcoming issue of EXILE Quarterly – as a “Gravitas” section.
As each image is posted, they will appear in the slider, below (this is the first):
